We’ve elected Josh Mace to curate not only our first release, but to establish a vision to what SQL can be. This first set of four tracks is a good indicator of what to hear in the future, reinforcing an idea without limitation. Sequel Sound is hunting for a certain vibe when we release our artists’ music, rather than following trends or doing what’s popular.
“I started writing the tunes for ‘Is This Home’ as soon as Jeff came to me with the groundwork for SQL. I’d been going through plans with my friend here in Akron about starting a label to release twelve inches, but we just weren’t on the same page, so naturally I wanted to help Jeff and be a part of the label. I was stoked to do the first release … and we are pretty much on the same wavelength as far as the label goes. Maybe not musically, but as far as what we want to contribute to the electronic music landscape.
This EP represents the feelings, hardships, happiness, and general all-around life events I’m experiencing right now, being back home in Akron, and working hard. It feels good to have a release for that, because I’m at a really pivotal point in my life. Music is challenging, but rewarding, and I’m more inspired and more creative then ever I feel. There’s a track inspired by my day job, a track inspired by my girl, and a track inspired about the street I grew up on, where I go and see my Mom every week. It’s a really tough thing to explain.. But basically this is a look into my life right now. I forgot about trends, and just did what felt right to a degree, and that’s what we push and really care about with the label.
Chris Audoly (BWI – BWI) sent me an email right as soon as me and Jeff started ironing things out for Sequel Sound. It was quite a coincidence, actually. I just decided to ask him to do the remix, and I’m really glad I did. You can listen to his remix and really feel his inspiration. We’re definitely going to work with him more. He killed it.”
